This extremely poor, rural area of India, where even the most basic medical needs of the population have gone undiagnosed and untreated, is now the site of a training and treatment facility for acupuncture: the Acupuncture Institute and Free Community Clinic of Ananda Nagar (AIAN). AIAN provides education, training, and facilities to local and visiting medical personnel. Its Free Clinic administers successful treatment for both acute and seriously chronic conditions, markedly enhancing the overall quality of life for its patients.

"Clinic lasted all morning, and sometimes went into the afternoon, since we attempted to treat everyone who came in. Some people would walk for hours or take the train from many miles away to get there. We treated many of the same conditions I treat in the U.S., such as musculoskeletal problems, head-aches, menstrual problems, and gastrointestinal problems. There were also many conditions I had no experience treating, such as leprosy, malnutrition and children who are failing to thrive."

-- Allison Quiring, AIAN Volunteer 2001

The AIAN is one of the several institutions operated by Ananda Marga Gurukula - an autonomous university. Based on Neo-Humanist Education Values, it aims at liberating the individual and society-at-large from physical and mental bondage, thereby clearing a path for spiritual realization.
